Peace and grace in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Luke 7:36-50 is about Jesus is anointed by a sinful woman.
Luke 7:36-37, 39-407:36. Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat.
7:37. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,
7:39. Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, "This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner."
7:40. And Jesus answered and said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." So he said, "Teacher, say it."
It refers to the
renewal by remission of sins, so one can receive the anointing of Holy Spirit.
If our sin is forgiven, we can receive the anointing of Holy Spirit.
There are three persons in Luke 7:36-50 as follows:
- Jesus.
- A woman who was a sinner.
- Simon the Pharisees.
Tonight, we learn the first person, namely
Jesus.
ad. 1. Jesus.
Only Jesus is the perfect, holy and true man. It means that He is sinless.
The proofs that Jesus is sinless are as follows:
- Jesus Himself testifies that He is sinless.
John 8:46
8:46. "Which of you convicts Me of sin?And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?
- Peteras His friend testifies too that Jesus is sinless.
1 Peter 2:21-22
2:21. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:
2:22. "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth";
- The centurion or His enemy.
Luke 23:47
23:47. So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous Man!"
- Pilatewho represents the world.
John 18:38b
18:38. Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in Him at all.
Only Jesus is the person who is able to redeem, forgive sinner, and save us by His sacrifice on the cross because He is the only innocent man.
John 16:716:7. "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.'I go away'means that
Jesus died on the cross, rose, and ascended to the Heaven to do two things as follows:
- To forgive sinner.
Jesus must bear our sin first through the death on the cross. He bears the curse of sin, so He can forgive us.
- To pour out Holy Spirit to all of us.
So, there is a relationship between the remission of sin and outpouring of Holy Spirit. Jesus appears as Holy Spirit Baptist.
Acts 2:382:38. Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.Experiencing the anointment or Holy Spirit baptism is the proof that our sin has been forgiven.
Why does God pour out Holy Spirit?
- Without Holy Spirit, the disciples or sons of God appear as orphans.
John 14:16-18
14:16. "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever––
14:17. "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
14:18. "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
Being orphans means the status is corrupted, from the son of God to the orphans.
Being orphans means one does neither have mother and father nor know his origins. It is like he has never been born. It means one who has never experienced new birth or renewal.
Consequently, he cannot inherit the kingdom of Heaven.
John 3:3, 5
3:3. Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
3:5. Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
That is why we must experience new birth through water and Holy Spirit baptism. The result is we become new life/new man/heavenly man and become son of God.
The sign of becoming the son of God is we can see the kingdom of God. It means as follows:
- We can prioritize Heaven things more than worldly one.
- We live in righteousness.
After seeing the Heaven, we can experience the atmosphere of Heaven and God’s caring, we live happily, until someday we enter eternal kingdom of Heaven.
- Without Holy Spirit, the servant of God appears as the willows by the rivers of Babylon.
Psalm 137:1-5
137:1. By the rivers of Babylon, There we sat down, yea, we wept When we remembered Zion.
137:2. We hung our harps Upon the willowsin the midst of it.
137:3. For there those who carried us away captive asked of us a song, And those who plundered us requested mirth, Saying, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
137:4. How shall we sing the LORD’S song In a foreign land?
137:5. If I forget you, O Jerusalem, Let my right hand forget its skill!
The willows are the servant of God without Holy Spirit. He is very weak and powerless, so he is dragged by the power of Babylon, namely influence of the world and uncleanness which bring us to the rivers of Babylon.
The willows should be at the river of life, but the place is corrupted so he is at the rivers of Babylon.
The willows become the place to hang the harps. It means one does not minister faithfully and fervently, but leaves the ministry.
Consequently, he will be at the rivers of Babylon, there is tear, physical and spiritual suffering, spiritual dryness and dissatisfaction.
If our ministry is corrupted, the marriage will be too. It is corrupted by Babylon, so the whole life is corrupted too.
Isaiah 44:3-4
44:3. For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, And floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, And My blessing on your offspring;
44:4. They will spring up among the grass Like willows by the watercourses.’
The willows are weak and powerless. It must be anointed by Holy Spirit, so it can be strong and of good courage, keep faithful and fervent in spirit in the ministry until Lord Jesus comes a second time.
If we are faithful in ministry, God will pour His blessing upon us too.
- Without Holy Spirit, the Gentiles appear like dog and swine only.
Dog means licking vomit. It means vain word, lie, evil speaking, false gossip, et cetera.
Swine means uncleanness, sin of eating-drinking (smoking, getting drunk and drugs abuse) and marrying-giving in marriage (sexual sins with all its kinds).
Romans 15:16
15:16. that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit is able to sanctify and change the Gentiles. It means that Holy Spirit burns the dog and swine to result in good and true word as well as good and true deed that please God.
It is like tasting sweet wine.
If spiritual miracle happens, the physical one will happen too, the impossible thing becomes possible and from nothing to something.
If Jesus comes a second time, we will be changed to become as glorious as Him and we are with Him forever.
God blesses us.
