Peace and grace in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Luke 8 refers to the Golden Candlestick. In Luke 8, there are seven stories that refer to seven lamps on the Golden Candlestick and they are as follows:
- Many Women Minister to Jesus (Luke 8:1-3).
- The Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:4-15).
- The Parable of the Revealed Light (Luke 8:16-18).
- Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Come to Him (Luke 8:19-21).
- Wind and Wave Obey Jesus (Luke 8:22-25).
- A Demon-Possessed Man Healed (Luke 8:26-39).
- A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed (Luke 8:40-56).
We discuss the seventh story namely
A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed.
In Luke 8:40-56, there are three stories that are closely related, so they become one story.
These three stories also refer to our personal life, namely body, soul and spirit as follows
- Jairus refers to weak bodybecause of problem or heavy burden, namely facing his daughter who was sick and dying, there was no hope.
- A woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years refers to weary soulthat languishes; there is no rest and peace.
It is like the blood keeps flowing for twelve years. There is a soul in the blood. Flowing of blood refers to weary soul.
- A sick girl who died refers to dead spirit. It means having no relationship with God.
These three persons also refer to three kinds of perseverance. The Golden Candlestick was hammered and it refers to perseverance.
We learn about the perseverance of Jairus, namely
the perseverance of faith.
Luke 8:40-42
8:40. So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him.
8:41. And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house,
8:42. for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him.
For learning the perseverance of faith, firstly we need to know the characteristic of true faith.
Romans 10:17
10:17. So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.The true faith comes by hearing the word of God, namely as follows:
- We hear the word that is anointed or opened its secret by Holy Spirit, namely a verse explains another verse in the Bible.
- We must be in the anointing of Holy Spirit when hearing the word and we do not depend on intelligence, power, et cetera.
The word can be faith when we hear it in the anointing of Holy Spirit. On the contrary, the word only becomes knowledge and it will be debated, so we do not believe it.
The process of Jairus' perseverance of faith is as follows:
- The faith and suffering.
Luke 8:41-42
8:41. And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house,
8:42. for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him.
Philippians 1:29
1:29. For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
The faith with suffering is stable faith.
Jairus must sacrifice as follows:
- His position as the ruler of the synagogue.
There was possibility that he would be expelled because of Jesus, but he willingly sacrificed his position.
For us now, it means we must sacrifice everything to come to Jesus (time, power, mind et cetera, except the word, because the word is Jesus Himself).
- Dignity.
After sacrificing dignity, we can sacrifice our interest and will.
If we have already sacrificed these things, we can surrender our whole life to God.
- The faith and patience.
Luke 8:42
8:42. for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him.
While his daughter was dying, the multitudes thronged Jesus. Jairus must be patient to wait God's time.
We must be patient too to wait God's time. Do not force God!
If we have not been helped yet by God, it means that we have a time to correct ourselves and keep believing and hoping God.
The faith and patience will result the total hope to God, namely holiness.
James 5:8-11
5:8. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
5:9. Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!
5:10. My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience.
5:11. Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Joband seen the end intended by the Lord––that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.
Do not grumble against one another if we have not been helped yet! But, we keep on giving thanks to God. After Job abhorred himself, God's helping came.
- The faith and boldness.
Luke 8:49-50
8:49. While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher."
8:50. But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, "Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well."
God's will is more than anything we think and try.
Jairus hoped the recovery, but if we wait God's time, we will receivethe power of resurrection.
Jairus has faith and boldness that result the love of God.
1 John 4:17-18
4:17. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldnessin the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world.
4:18. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
We must have the boldness for facing the problem up to the day of judgment that we will free from judgment and we live with Jesus forever.
Do not give up and be desperate when we fall into sin!
Luke 8:51
8:51. When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl.
God works only with one who has faith, hope and love, namely Jairus and his wife (in marriage, two becomes one), added by James (faith), Peter (hope) and John (love).
The people who ridiculed Jesus were not allowed to come because they did not believe Him.
There is no hard problem for God. It is like to wake one who is sleeping.
The results are as follows:
- The miracle happens. The impossible thing becomes possible.
God is able to finish all our problems in due time. Nothing is late and impossible.
- God opens the new way for us.
God gives new future or beautiful one.
- God purifies and changes us up to being perfect. We are lifted up on the glorious clouds and look at Jesus face to face.
1 Corinthians 13:12-13
13:12. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
13:13. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
God blesses us.
