Peace and grace in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Luke 9:51-56 is about a Samaritan village rejects the Savior.
Luke 9:51-52
9:51. Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem,
9:52. and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him.
Jesus steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem. It is the same as cross sight or the spiritual one. Jesus willingly dies to become sin offering (the atonement offering) to reconcile us with God and others.
Ephesians 2:13-16
2:13. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
2:14. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,
2:15. having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace,2:16. and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. In the past time, the Gentiles and Israelites were not one. Christ's sacrifice makes them one perfect body of Christ, so we can enter New Jerusalem.
Luke 9:53
9:53. But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.
Samaria is the capital of Israel, and Jerusalem is the one of Judah.
The Samaritans have no dealings with the Jews. It refers to Christian who has fleshly sight, so his life is not changed. He does not enter the fellowship of the body of Christ, but causes division. It is the same as building the body of Babylon, namely wickedness, uncleanness, bitterness, revenge, hatred,
et cetera.
Consequently, he will be consumed by fire from the heaven.
1 Kings 22: 5122:51. Ahaziah the son of Ahab became king over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned two years over Israel.2 Kings 1:1-18 is about the story of the Samaritans who were consumed by the fire from the heaven because they did not want to be reconciled. King Ahaziah sent three groups to meet Elijah the prophet.
2 Kings 1:9-10
1:9. Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. So he went up to him; and there he was, sitting on the top of a hill. And he spoke to him: "Man of God, the king has said, 'Come down!'"
1:10. So Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men." And fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
The first group was a captain with his fifty men. They came with arrogance and did not want to be reconciled.
Consequently, they were consumed by the fire from heaven.
2 Kings 1:11-12
1:11. Then he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty men. And he answered and said to him: "Man of God, thus has the king said, 'Come down quickly!'"
1:12. So Elijah answered and said to them, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men." And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
The second group is the same as the first one, so they were consumed by the fire from heaven.
2 Kings 1:13-14
1:13. Again, he sent a third captain of fifty with his fifty men. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and pleaded with him, and said to him: "Man of God, please let my life and the life of these fifty servants of yours be precious in your sight.
1:14. "Look, fire has come down from heaven and burned up the first two captains of fifties with their fifties. But let my life now be precious in your sight."
The third group humbled themselves to be reconciled (confessing and forgiving one another), so they were safe.
Luke 9:53-56
9:53. But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.
9:54. And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?"
9:55. But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.
9:56. "For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them." And they went to another village. When James and John want to punish the Samaritans with the fire, Jesus rebukes them.
It means Jesus does not come to destroy the sinners, but love and save them through His sacrifice on the cross.
John 3:16
3:16. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
The Samaritans should be destroyed by the fire from heaven.
Jesus sends His disciples to Samaria to save them, so they enter the building of the body of Christ.
- John the apostle refers to the love of God in the form of Christ's sacrifice on the cross to save the sinners.
- James the apostle refers to the faith (believing Jesus as the only one savior).
- Peter the apostle refers to the hope.
2 Peter 3:9-10
3:9. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
3:10. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
Although the Samaritans refuse Jesus, Samaria is not consumed.
It means the longsuffering of God that He still gives the chance to repent.
The longsuffering of God is we are still given long life and He has not come yet.
We must use the opportunity that God gives to us. We must use the longsuffering of God to repent, confess our sin to Him and others, and forgive others' sin. If we are forgiven, do not sin anymore.
If the sins are finished, the tears will be wiped. God is able to finish all of our problems up to the impossible ones. Failure is changed into success and beauty.
Revelation 21:5-6
21:5. Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful."
21:6. And He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.
Until everything is finished and we are perfected to become as glorious as God to enter New Jerusalem, the eternal kingdom of Heaven.
God blesses us.
